John Gotti was an American organized-crime boss whose flamboyant lifestyle and frequent public trials made him a prominent figure in the 1980s and ’90s. He was born on October 27, 1940, in South Bronx, New York, U.S. and died on June 10, 2002, in Springfield, Missouri.

Gotti grew up in a life of organized crime. After serving time for hijacking trucks and a revenge slaying, Gotti wrested control of the Gambino crime family in 1985. Despite the future nickname, John Gotti—a violent, ruthless mobster who’d grown up on the streets of New York—had been in and out of prison several times in his early career.

John Joseph Gotti Jr. was an American gangster and boss of the Gambino crime family in New York City. He ordered and helped to orchestrate the murder of Gambino boss Paul Castellano in December 1985 and took over the family shortly thereafter, becoming boss of what was described as America's most powerful crime syndicate.
