Who Is Eddie Mabo


Eddie Mabo was a Torres Strait Islander activist who fought for and established land rights for Torres Strait Islander peoples in the 1980s and '90s. He is best known for the two court cases that bear his name, Mabo v. Queensland (numbers 1 and 2). Those cases resulted in the acknowledgment that Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples had the right to claim the land they and their ancestors had lived on for thousands of years.

Edward ‘Koiki’ Mabo was born on June 29, 1936 at Las, on Mer, in the Murray group of islands, Queensland. He was the fourth surviving child of Murray Islands-born parents ‘Robert’ Zesou Sambo, seaman, and his wife ‘Annie’ Poipe, née Mabo.

Mabo was a community leader and land rights campaigner who fought for Indigenous land rights in Australia. He died on January 21, 1992 in Brisbane.
